At the beginning of August I downloaded this free 32 pager on the basics of good collaboration and did a quick post. Having just read it I want to expand my post slightly.
This subject is simple in theory but really easy to do either badly or partially. The document sets out the 12 principles and then gives a explanation of each and how they can be designed into a community or facilitated. The twelve are:
- Purpose - the group does something useful for members - meets a defined need
- identity - members can identify each other meaningfully
- Reputation - based on activity and the opinions of others
- Governance - self-governance based on agreed principles
- Communication - required amongst members!
- Groups - self selection by shared interests
- Environment - in short an intuitive digital space
- Boundaries - it is clear where the community begins and ends and what differentiates a member from a non-member
- Trust - along with communication this is core
- Exchange - ideas, goods, services should be capable of flowing fbetween members, between group and members
- Expression - relevant activity is easy to track and be aware of
- History - part of the groups identity
This is well written and a really useful overview of the fundamentals for anyone building out a digital or online community. You can download it from this link: www.jivesoftware.com/clearstep/docs/DOC-1083
