Hats off to Damien who came up with the idea of bloggers cooperating to cover Irish web services through posts and reviews every second Tuesday.
Putplace is the first recipient of this.
At it's simplest it is an online backup service - and that is what I have been using the beta version as for over 6 months now. Beyond that it aims to allow you to ensure that multiple copies of files across multiple devices are backed up once - avoiding the duplication that would occur otherwise.
"Seeding" the service is an issue - this is where the first copy of a file or folder is uploaded onto the Putplace service. Once that it done however then only changed documents are uploaded so it is much quicker.
Also of concern is the current treatment of email data - my Thunderbird backup has been replicated a number of times on the Putplace system instead of the original copy being updated and overwritten. So I am now using 907% of my 2G limit! The limit does not apply during the beta which is still continuing.
UPDATE - Joe Drumgoole (CEO of Putplace) confirmed in a comment that this issue with email client backups will be overcome in an upcoming version. He had told me that during an email exchange recently and I should have included it here
Give it a shot and see what you think.
