Somewhere in Canada there is a happy penguin colony

Two weeks ago I did a slot on KCLR96FM (Kilkenny Carlow radio) about Club Penguin. This is an heavily moderated (to ensure safety) online community for children from 8 to 14 and we discussed it's appeal for kids and how it helps to protect them online.

My daughter had been listening to the interview and afterwards went to the site and signed up. As did my son - who is usually more inclined towards the action genre. Both of them now have paid memberships and have played on it regularly since which was very interesting for me as an indication of its appeal and stickiness.

€700 million
This is the price (€350M in cash and €350M in earnout potential between now and 2009) that Disney have just paid to capture the eyeballs of an emerging onine generation. They now have over 700,000 paying members in their sights and a great opportunity both to cross sell to them and also to follow them into their teens with other online services. Well done to the founders  - almost overnight since they only opened for business in the latter half of 2005.
