I am almost four months pregnant with my first baby and all my existing clothes are beginning to get very tight. I think its time I started buying some maternity clothes. I have been putting it off as I don't know where to start - I work in an office and want to continue to look stylish and feel comfortable. Have you any suggestion for me? Thank you, Liz.
Hi Liz,
Well this is an exciting time for you if at times a little daunting! I was the same on my first baby - I kept putting off getting into maternity wear. However it is important to wear maternity clothes as being pregnant is not like putting on a bit of weight - your whole body changes shape and you will start to feel very uncomfortable if your clothes are not shaped to fit your growing bump.
And of course you look a lot better in the correct size clothing rather then squeezed into your normal clothes. Maternity wear has come a long way since the smock dress and over-sized t-shirts; we now have some very stylish designs on the High Street to choose from.
Mums to be are very lucky in Kilkenny as we have our own maternity boutique called Nine Months on Kieran Street (056 7723090). I spoke to Ann the proprietor and she kindly talked me
through their great selection of stock. She has some good work wear which includes black trousers and a very stylish white shirt with an adjustable tie fastening. Along with various other everyday pieces that you will get lots of wear from she also sells the very popular maternity jeans in various styles - a must for every pregnant woman's wardrobe! Look out for her lovely linen range in printed black and whites and of course it's very important to have some good maternity underwear which Ann stocks, which also includes nursing bras.
I noticed an item called a lycra tube that is worn over your growing tummy which helps to prevent a gap between your skirt and trousers or t-shirt and the bottom of your blouse. This will also look very funky worn over a coordinating top. If you are planning to go away this
summer they stock some nice swimwear as well.
These are just some of the items Ann stocks in her shop, which is full of pregnancy essentials, and gadgets she will be on hand to advice you on the best purchase suited to your particular lifestyle.
Dorothy Perkins in Goods also carry a good range of reasonably priced practical maternity wear and Dunne's Stores, Benetton and Winstons have all got some nice classic pieces. You don't have to fork out large amounts of money on maternity wear - friends and relatives will only be too happy to pass on pieces from their wardrobes which will allow you to spend money on special pieces for your maternity wardrobe. All the best with your pregnancy.
